Hamza Kibwana Mwapachu (1913 - 1962)
|
''By and by the real and true story
of the early years of the struggle for Tanganyika"s independence will get
written. Kleist has at last come out to disclose what has been distorted
before. Hamza Mwapachu had tabled Nyerere's name as future leader of Tanganyika
to Abdul Sykes as early as 1950 when Nyerere was in Scotland. At University of
Edinburgh. Hamza knew Nyerere from 1943 and was convinced of his leadership
qualities. Early in 1953 Abdul and Ali Mwinyi Tambwe visited Hamza in Ukerewe
where the British colonialists had exiled him. During that visit they discussed
the TAA President elections in mid 1953. Hamza told Abdul to support
Nyerere's candidature. Abdul agreed even when a large TAA electorate which
was heavily Muslim dominated were inclined to vote for Abdul who was the
incumbent President. Abdul campaigned for Nyerere. The rest is history. Hamza's
role is yet to be recognised in Tanzania.''
